Our story: the history of Jane Lewis

Jane Lewis Healthcare Recruitment was founded in 1987 by Lucy Bartlett, a nurse and entrepreneur with a passion for providing high-quality care. At the time, Lucy ran a guest house in Llandudno, Wales. During the quieter winter months, she worked shifts at local care homes to supplement her income. When a care home manager asked if she knew other nurses who could cover shifts, Lucy saw an opportunity! And so, from her kitchen table, Jane Lewis Healthcare Recruitment was born.

Rather than naming the agency after herself, Lucy chose to honour her grandmother by calling it Jane Lewis. What started as a small, local staffing service soon grew into a trusted name in healthcare recruitment.

In 1990 Lucy’s son, Nick stepped in to help run the business. Over time, Nick, along with his wife, took the helm and led Jane Lewis through a period of growth and expansion. Under their leadership, the agency expanded beyond North Wales into Northern England, establishing a strong presence across the region.

To support its continued growth, Jane Lewis moved its central services to Chester, which became its Head Office for a substantial period of time. From there, the business expanded further into Shropshire, the Midlands and the Southeast, providing high-quality healthcare staffing across the UK.

In 2019, Jane Lewis acquired Medbank, a Midlands-based staffing agency. This acquisition strengthened our presence in the region; Medbank has since been fully integrated into the Jane Lewis Midlands branch.

Today, Jane Lewis remains committed to its founding values; supporting healthcare professionals and care providers with excellence, integrity, and a personal touch. Over 37 years since its humble beginnings, we are back in North Wales, with our St Asaph office acting as our Head Office and continue to grow while staying true to Lucy’s vision: making a meaningful difference in healthcare staffing.
