What is a Support Worker?

The main role of a Support worker is to look after the wellbeing of people in their care and to enable them to live as independently as possible. As a Support Worker you could be supporting people with physical or learning disabilities, mental health or other complex needs.

The tasks that you undertake as a Support Worker will differ depending on the needs of the individual you are supporting. Tasks can include prompting personal care, assisting with food preparation, providing emotional support and providing support within social activities.

What is the difference between a
Support Worker and a Healthcare Assistant?

The roles of a Support Worker and Healthcare Assistant can be quite similar, and care workers can quite easily work interchangeably between the two roles if they wish. The main difference between the two roles is that generally Support Workers are there to give guidance and support service users in completing the tasks independently. A Healthcare Assistant usually provides more hands-on care with things like washing, dressing and eating.
