The Art of Nursing: Srijana’s Journey

My journey into nursing didn’t begin at university – it began much earlier.

From 2009 to 2014, I worked as a Health Care Assistant in a nursing home. It was during this time that I truly discovered my passion for supporting people through both the routine and the personal moments of care. I was also using this time to prepare myself for university, building experience, confidence, and the motivation I’d need to take the next step.

In 2014, I started my degree in Adult Nursing at the University of Brighton. Alongside my studies, I continued working as a Health Care Assistant at the Royal Sussex University Hospital. This balance of learning and hands-on practice helped cement my skills and gave me a well-rounded foundation to become the nurse I am today.

After qualifying in 2017, I began working as a Nurse at Worthing Hospital, in the Outpatient Department the Inpatient Ward. These early years were packed with learning – administering medication, managing care plans, and supporting patients with a wide range of conditions. I also lead healthcare assistants to conduct different procedures passing on what I’d learned and supporting them.

From 2019, I moved into elderly and dementia care, working in nursing homes including Downlands and Portheaven. These roles taught me the importance of empathy, patience, and clear communication – especially when working with residents living with Alzheimer’s, dementia, and complex health needs.

In 2022, I joined Martlets Hospice. It was a role where I supported patients and their families through palliative and end-of-life care. The work required not only clinical knowledge but also emotional intelligence, understanding, and the ability to be fully present in someone’s most vulnerable moments.

Now, I work with Jane Lewis, currently based at the Hothfield Brain Injury Rehabilitation Centre in Ashford. Supporting individuals on their rehabilitation journeys following traumatic brain injuries is both challenging and inspiring. I work closely with a multidisciplinary team, helping patients feel safe, empowered, and supported as they move toward recovery.

Throughout this journey, from HCA to Registered Nurse, I’ve never stopped learning. Nursing has given me purpose, perspective, and pride.
